Looks like you had a good trip! I’ll be up there next month. Can’t wait!!
The Deschutes river is one of the Northwest's top Steelhead and wild trout rivers.

I floated it once with a guide service in early October maybe 20 years ago from below Maupin down to the mouth.
We floated and camped for 3-4 days? It was a really great experience for all.
They had us used floating lines and a tapered leader and a #6 Silver Hilton fly.

I once fished from the mouth up in a big jet boat with Gary Loomis and Steve Rajeff for a day trip.
We fished a floating line, leader and winged very dark flashy fly in size 6.
Seem like the fish loved to feed in the shade.

Those trips were all before the Spey thing happened.

Maybe 40 years ago we would have people come into the shop with a list from a guide up on the Deshutes River.
They wanted a Fenwick Feralite fiberglass 2 piece fly rod that was 8'6" and #8 line.......FF858.
They wanted a Pflueger Medalist 1495 1/2 fly reel.
They wanted 100 yds of 20# Micron backing.
And they wanted a DT8F fly line.....double taper 8 floating.
This was the guides outfit of choice on the Deschutes River for Steelhead 40 years ago.

Also around 1975 or so the fly line companies came out with the integrated sink tip fly line.
Top Steelhead fly anglers up in Oregon were splicing some sinking fly line on the front of their floating fly lines and the fly line Reps heard about it so they start making them in the factory.
In 1976 I took one of the first sink-tips to Alaska.....wow.

The Deschutes River is famous for trout fishing on it's huge stone fly hatch around early June but a guide told me that July was better with good caddis hatches and way less anglers.

It’s been a few years since I last fished the D - good to see the mixing tower at Lake Billy Chinook hasn’t completely “fixed” the river. That is one beautiful chunk of steel - surface take?
Most of us don't have to hook too many Steelhead to have a good trip.
