i think of bill and his family often and well. a friend i took down the Deschutes on a rafting trip sent me the forum. sure enough, i am still above ground at 83 and recently rowed a crew of my son,s friends down the deschutes...disabled marine vet who can,t walk very well but can row like crazy. lol.
i live with my darling wife of 35 yrs on the central coast of Oregon. we live a quarter mile from the ocean. my gills required that i return to the salt water.
have conducted guided trips all over the western usa for the past 40 yrs. retired now. good thing. our rivers on the whole oregon coast are closed due to global warming and its impact on the salmon runs. we can still crab and dig clams so that is nice.

Great to hear from you, Mike. Fond memories of that trip on the Deschutes back in the eighties, dodging "oh, shit, rock" and nailing the salmonfly hatch.

OMG, Hi Mike

This is so, so exciting. You are still living the dream, especially where you live now.

Marilyn and I love the Pacific coast because we always feel good when ever we are over there.

I have some old Sacramento fly fishers who move to Seaside Oregon maybe 40 years ago.

I watch a lots of YouTube videos of clamming and crabbing on the Oregon coast.

Mike just called me from his home in Florence, Oregon and we had a nice long conversation catching up on the last ~30 years.

He retired from the State of California at 58 and did a lots moving around since then.

They had a home down on the tip of Baja just up on the Pacific side at Pescadero.

He said the surf fishing was very good.

He did a lot of float trips in remote Alaska too.

Right now Mike said the rivers in Oregon are closed to protect the salmon.

He said the clamming and crabbing is very good though.

In the summer at Florence, OR the high temperatures are in the 60s with fresh air.

Wow - what a blast from the past, Mike! Glad you’re doing well, and still on the sticks!

Speaking of rowing, we were up in Newport and Florence in June while my younger son was at a rowing camp at OSU. He’s a HS senior and hopes to row for the Beavers next year. He’s supposed to go on an official team visit in Nov - I’ll have to pick your brain on what might be in which river once he firms up the date.

Drove the entire Oregon Coast this summer, I'd been to parts of Southern and North Oregon coast but never the length of it. Told my wife, I'd I ever bought a cabin, or a small piece of land, it would be somewhere along the coast of Oregon. I love the small towns and remote areas in between. Beaches empty of people, lush green campgrounds and of course the Pacific, I love it. We were headed to Ilwaco Washington, where I was stationed in the early 90's, I love it there too. Such a different world than here.

We would love the Oregon or Washington coast.

You could be on the Oregon or Washington coast in the Summer and the Florida or Texas coast in the Winter.

Florida and Texas have no state income tax.

My cousin and her husband retired maybe 10 years ago and with a large diesel pickup and huge 5th wheel they checked out almost

ever RV park on the Northern California, Oregon and Washington coast for maybe 5 years? They found about 6 of them they really

loved but they go all summer every year to Winchester Bay RV Park right on Winchester Bay. They get the same spot every summer

and have met many of the people there who do exactly what they do, kind of like a big family. The guys go fishing in the bay for

salmon and set crab traps while the women folks go into Coos Bay to eat lunch and shop.

It would be nice to be able to find a place near the cool Pacific ocean to put a permanent travel trailer.

If you buy a cabin or small vacation home, in ten years it will usually be worth more money.
