Went yesterday with two friends. Ten fish to the boat between 2-7 pounds, half stripping leeches and half on chironomids. Water getting soupy and warm-72 degrees. I only took one fish. Here is the best fish of the day taken by Jeff.

I fished it yesterday and the day before. I went with the same guy both days. We got 19 on thursday and 11 yesterday. All on leeches.





I have yet to get a decent klamath fish on a chironomid. I have taken a couple smaller ones but never a big fish. I have a hard time with my patience there with indicators so I have never tried it for more than 30 min before Im back to stripping.

I know you get most of your fish in that area but have you done well with chironomids in the rocky point area?

Jay: Have only taken a very few fish on chironomids in the Rocky Point area but last week the posted 11# fish was taken on a chironomid. At Agency have done far better with chironomids but only in a couple of areas. Yes the tried and true method is stripping leeches. At Agency there does not seem to be a difference in the size of the fish taken by chironomids vs. leeches.

Its tempting when you see a potpouri of hatches to put on a nymph, either indicator or stripping, but the leeches seem to work at all times anyway.

We saw a couple large natural leeches swimming and they were earthworm color. I found some nice light grey marabou and think Ill give it a whirl next time.

I think this is one of the best "caught fish" pics I have ever seen. Way to think out of the box!

I have recently been fishing with my buddy whos a professional photographer. Hes also an insanely talented flyfisherman. Catching a fish has become more of a production with the attempt to get excellent photos. He has a huge livewell in his boat that we fill with cool water at the springs and place the fish in it to help it recover. This is really nice in a place like klamath where the water temp can be well into the 70s. The other nice thing is we can "prepare" for great photos. We will decide what we want for background based on the sun position and cloud formations and background geography. Sometimes requires even repositioning the boat. But these photos are very important to Curtis as they are potentially valuable. (He has many published flyfishing and wildlife photos) The bonus is the fish is reviving in cool spring water while we prepare the shot. When everything is prepared, the photo process is extremely fast and with a high quality SLR, you can captuer 12 shots in 10 seconds. Then the fish is released.

I have been inspired by Curtis' photography and have composed some nice ones myself, including the one above and in the next second or two, this one...

We have a lot of fun with it and Curtis has some pretty cool ideas in the hopper for the next time we go. He just left to Alaska today so it may be a couple weeks. But I hope to be posting some neat pictures this summer.
