Default Photo Report on Yellow creek

Gregg and I had a great day on Yellow Creek today.

Yellow Creek is a nice, yet more challenging, change from the standard freestone creek fishing. You have to work harder for these trout due to the spooky-ness of the trout due to the clarity of this spring fed creek. The aquatic vegetation also makes fishing and presenting the fly challenging. The challenging features of Yellow Creek make you appreciate every trout much more compared to trout caught in freestone streams.

Humbug Valley was warm and beautiful today. The water was clear, as always, and so was the sky.

Due to the clear water we had to approach the creek slowly and keep a low profile.

Sometimes, to achieve a proper drift we had to stand up to control our line and keep it away from all of the obstructions such as grasses and aquatic vegetation. Line control is crucial when fishing Yellow Creek, so is casting proficiency, IMHO.

There are plenty of small trout available to anglers who can control their line.

The majority of the trout caught today were brown trout, mostly small 5-7 inchers.

I also caught a couple of brook trout.

I caught more "large" browns this trip, from 8-10", than on my previous trip last year.

My largest brown was about 12" and it fought very well, my little 3wt had fun with these "larger" browns.

Gregg took a little while to warm up but once he did he caught about 5 or so trout during a brief caddis hatch. E/C caddis in a #16 or #18 olive or tan worked very well today.

Unfortunately I do not have any fish pictures with Gregg or myself holding a fish in the picture. We were busy catching fish at the same time during midday when the fishing was the best for us, due to our late morning start and our early departure at 3pm. We would have loved to fish until dark to hit a possible evening hatch, hopefully next time.

We had a great trip catching small trout and enjoying a beautiful day out on the water.

Great report and wonderful photos Adam.

I think you did better than most I have talked to over the past decade.

I have never been there, only seen photos.

    Thanks

Adam, great report and pictures! Glad to see you and Gregg getting out there and into 'em. I've never been there but it seems like a very nice creek. Clearly, you guys were up to the challenge.

Looks like a nice body of water Adam. Did you and Gregg do any "in the water" wading or was it all from the banks? The first photo looks like a great holding place for trout...

    Thanks...

Sully, there was no "in the water" fishing. The noise and wake would alarm the fish, very spooky fish.

Ya, those are some really spooky fish. Fished there two years
ago...you have to keep such a low profile when approaching rising
fish...and even then, they will quit rising when you get within
    casting distance. They see/hear everything.

Supposedly there are lunkers in there....never caught a brown
    bigger than 12 inches though.

    Great pics and post Adam!
