It'll take a while to save $1,000 for a good lens !!
There are some great macro lens for much less than $1,000. Tamron, Sigma and Tokina all make great
macro lenses. These are all around $400, and being macro lenses they are all sharp.
I also have a d50, and just yesterday i picked up a vivitar series 1 90mm 2.5 macro for $130. This lens is
just about as good as it gets, but it is completely manual, (no metering, manual-focus, and stop down aperture).
This lens is 30 years old, but it is awesome.
Other old manual focus lenses to look for are the tokina 90mm 2.5, vivitar series 1 105mm 2.8, and the
kiron 105 2.8. It seems as though you are taking pictures of the bugs in some type of holding container,
so having to manually adjust everything won't be that bad.
