    Default Lake Davis

The ice has been off the lake for a while and the fish are in false spawn mode right now. Not much of a snowpack to feed the lake or the feeder streams this year. The lake is at around 66% of capacity and water temps are in the low to mid 40's (estimated). Fish are being caught from shore stripping small buggers on a floating line with a fairly long leader. Sight fishing opportunities are available and the grabs are fairly light. The fish are pretty lethargic in the cold water.

I'm afraid this lake will be done very early this year due to low and warm water conditions as it has been very warm up here lately and a weak ass snowpack. Get it while the getting is good!

Bill Forward has been fishing the lake a bunch in the last month, he showed me some awesome pics down at the Pleasanton show - Those rainbows are getting big! If the Skwala dry fly action wasn't so good on the Lower Yuba, and busy with trips, I would have been up there weeks ago. The lake will be fine, I've seen this before.

Thanks for the report Jay, I'll be doing trips up there starting in a few weeks - See ya on the water!

Gene, I was on the lake nearly everyday in fall last year and DWR dumped a bunch of water in late September, I guess they have to keep those reservoirs full in Southern California

The good thing about lower water is more points and strands to fish off the bank, and fish are more concentrated in those "known" fishy areas. I'm more worried about getting my boat in during the fall season. Got to stay positive!

I guess i'm just whining Jon, Lake Davis has been through so much...... and the last couple of years the lake was brim full, and the weed beds were just catching up with surface of the lake and......I'm whining again.....i will try to stay positive the lake is half full not half empty.

So Jon are you going to do any guiding in the evening for the Hexagenia hatch at Lake Davis ?????

Absolutely Gene, whatever my guests want to do, we're doing it. The hex hatch just blows away anglers who have never seen it before, it's awesome to see their reaction when a bug pops up next to the boat!
