DIY magnetic fly rod carrier

Ended up making some of these after I dropped my store bought ones, breaking the magnet. They are very easy to make other than the pain of finding and getting the magnets out of two microwaves. One I got from behind lowes and the other was from my rental house that went belly up. Tested them up on the truckee river hit 70mph on 80 with two rods attached and they handled it well.

Pretty cool, just be real carful with removing magnets from microwaves, TV's, etc the capacitors have enough power stored to kill you.

I made a similar set but I ended up just purchasing the magnets at a local hardware store for about 5$ each.

nice....what did you put on the magnet portion to keep them from scratching your car up?

I used some 2" clear packing tape on the bottom of the mags.

Fubar, how did you attach your magnets? How do your racks do running down the road?

The magnets have hole right through center and are recessed on the bottom to accommodate a nut for the carriage bolt. After I drilled through the pvc elbow, I flattened the area where the bolt head would seat with an angle grinder and squared the hole a bit with a file.
It has held up well so far but I freely admit I have not used it on the freeway at 75 mph.....

Fubar like your design better than the ones on youtube. Looks more secure given that the magnets are in line with the direction of travel. What hardware store did you find the magnets? Really don't want to mess with anymore microwaves.

I purchased them at two local hardware stores, Harbor Freight Tools and Ace Hardware, there are probably others. I think they are also readily available online.
