    Default Trinity 11/11-12/06

Drove up from Orange County (610 miles) on Friday with my brother-in-law (1st steelhead trip), just had to get out on the water. Stayed in Weaverville with plans to fish either the Junction City area or Steiner Flat Rd. Ended up on Steiner Flat Rd.

Ended up with two fish and two solid grabs on Saturday all on either a BH P.T. or a Red Copper John both size 12. Fished Sunday morning till noon and got one more this time on a size 16 Red Copper John. A guide I ran into at dinner Saturday night said to go smaller with the flies.

I have one more trip in January planned with a guide on a float trip and hopefully it will work out too.

I also want to say thanks to everyone on the board, I enjoy your posts and the info you provide.

    Default First Trip.....

Arbolado,.... Happy to hear you had success on your first Steelhead trip. That's a long way to go get into some fish. Now that you've been initiated into the Salmon/Steelhead fraternity, get ready to make many mnore trips like this one and, hopefully, just as succesfull.

I was up there last week and did pretty good.As far as the smaller flies, while yes they get grabs, they also straighten out on the bigger fish.Nothing more frustrating than to come tight to a big fish only to have the hook straigten out.I did fine on larger flies.Welcome to the world of steelheading!BTW it took 3 years of chasing steel before I finally landed my first one.Good job getting one on your fist trip!Jay

Welcome to the board and a new addiction . I was an Orange County rat 28 years ago and I think steelhead had some influence on my departure to Oregon.

Are you using store bought nymphs? Believe me, there are nymphs the size of a size 20 nymph that can catch a 30 pound salmon without straightening out. A bronze forged size 16 scud 2x short 2x strong, 2x wide. Tiemco or Targus. Believe me you will never worry about straightening out
If you are buying your hooks make sure they are 2x strong, 2x wide will also help.
