    Default Spey casting for Shad..............

An old friend Nelson Ishiyama from the Bay Area was by the shop mid-day on Friday.

He had tried some Spey casting for Shad that morning below the island that is above the Sunrise Bridge with a little luck.

Andy advised him to fish the water about 200 yards above the island and fish right up till dark.

He just emailed me that he caught about 15 Shad there Friday evening.

    HI Bill

Gary Anderson and I have not fished for Shad with a spey but have thought that the new med-small two handers with a full sinking head would be the ultimate tool. Do you know the what rod he was using and how it was set up. Gary has re-engineered most of the Sage VT-2 series into 2 handed speys 11'3" to 11'9" . I fished these VT-2 SPORT Rods (SP ey / sh ORT) from a drift boat during June for salmon flies. Two handed rods 11 to 12 feet provided control, ease of cast and accuracy. Landing fish in a boat with rods over 12 feet is awkward so from my boat we keep it under that. Would love your thoughts.

    Steve
