I fished Butte creek yesterday and only caught a few small trout.
The water looks pretty good, definately fishable but still a little too high for my taste. The high water severely limited my dry fly opportunities within the pocket water sections.
I caught and hooked a couple on stimulators and caught one on a #14 PT.
Here's one of those fish.
The really cool part of the trip was the amount of large mayflies that were flying around and landing on me. I've never seen so many large mayflies on a small stream like this. These mayflies were about a #12 or large #14. Here are just a sample of the many pictures that I took of the mayflies.
There were different stages of this mayfly flying around, or they were two different mayflies, some were dark colored like a post molted mayfly.
Some were light colored like a newly emreged dun.
Unfortunately I didn't have any flies that size or color, the closest was this light cahill.
Here are some of the shucks.
This shuck is from a stubby stonefly (I think) or maybe a clinger style mayfly nymph.
A swimmer type of mayfly.
Look at the size of this mayfly shuck.
I also saw some stoneflies but the cloudy weather made them sluggish. I never saw one flying around, unlike the large amounts of those large maylfies.
I enjoyed taking pictures of the insects and the scenery. I had a fun day, maybe after the flows go down a little bit more I can catch more fish with a dry fly.
