Mullet pattern

I have been in the laboratory again I started thinking that the most prominant features of a mullet that set them apart from other baitfish is the black stripe on their tail, and of coarse their wide profile. I'm not too sure about the color. Should it have a gray back?

This fly is tied on a 4/0 tiemco 811s. The tail is pink pearl lure tape made by lhur jensen. I cut two symetrical peices and stuck them together on the end of 100# mono, which is glued and tied to hook shank. The body material is 100% macreme yarn, combed out.

Any critique for improvement would be much appreciated.

Jay,.... Good looking pattern. I kinda feel the colors are right. My only concern is how will the fly react while being cast

I've been tying a Mullet pattern based on a combination of Jay Murakoshi's Sea Habit and the Rasta. My tail is 6 - 10 strands of pearl Lateral Scale or pearl Fire Fly. I painted about an eighth of an inch at the end of the tail with a black enamel paint pen....

I agree, casting might be interesting. One of the aspects I forgot to mention is the white material on this fly is glow in the dark. And it really glows brightly! Cool stuff.

I wished I had this fly last year in baja. Mullet were the only game in town and the roosters were a very short cast away.

If it casts like a dead chicken It'll have to become a display case model. I have alot of ideas that percolate and its fun to bring them to life.

The funny thing is, the only game in my neck of the woods is steelhead and trout, and the only flies I enjoy tying are baitfish...maybe its my way of dreaming I was in Mexico

Jay, man, between these and the tube poppers, I've really enjoyed your efforts! I think these mullet flies look great -- my son just walked by and noted they looked like real fish. I can't wait to hear how they work out. Also really looking forward to seeing your other ideas brought to life.

I order macreme yarn from someone I know on the east coast. She has an unbelievable asortment of colors including glow in the dark white. This stuff glows so brightly, you could literally read by it. I had an email exchange with her last year. She usually sells macreme in 100yrd rolls. I convinced her to sell me 10 different colors equalling 100 yrds. She said if I could get enough flyfisherpeople turned on to her products, she would start to assemble smaller packages for us. It never really caught on as far as I know. As you may or may not know, macreme yarn is the #1 material for yarn indicators. And it is a fantastic synthetic wing material.

I can only imagine how productive a glow in the dark baitfish pattern would be off the beach at night in baja.

Thanks, that glow in the dark cord looks pretty good for night fishing around lighted docks at night
