Hi Bill,..... That's a tough question to answer. Don't have an overall favorite. I choose a particular style, weight, size and finish based on the type of fish and fishing I'll be doing....
Some examples are, choosing to use a Tiemco, model 2302 hook for medium/large nymphs when fishing for larger Trout, rather than the model 200. Model 200 has a more aesthetic appearance but I don't rate it as heavy or strong.
Except for Stripers, I rarely tie with an Eagle Claw product. The exceptions are models 413 and 1197.... I've had some 1197's straighten when attached to large Steelhead in estuaries. Model 413 appears to be strong, tho.
I use Partridge/Daiichi (Alec Jackson Spey) hooks for display flies (Salmon/Steelhead) and saltwater is a different topic, entirely.

Bill,
I tend to prefer Tiemco. Expensive.... but I don't tie large quantities. I like their selection and the quality of the product. My next choice is Daiichi, then Partridge, then Mustad. I used to buy Dai-Riki Hooks but had too many rejects. Didn't trust them.
For the Tiemcos: 100, 5210,5212 for my dries
2457 for my midges and scuds
200R for my Stones
5262,5263 for my buggers and leeches
300 for my featherwing streamers
9300 for my wet flies
I recognize that many, who tie in quantity and have been tying a long time, really like Mustad. I understand that their current product line rates right up with TMC and Daiichi. They were kind of like our US auto makers, they sat on their laurels and let the others pass them by. But, they've regained the quality control issues and are putting out a good product for a much better price. I may tend to drift to Mustad in the future.

I've messed around with the Mustad saltwater hooks but they don't seem to hold a point well. Do you find the same case with the smaller size hooks?
Saltwater I'm fishing mostly gami's and Tiemcos. The Gami bonefish hooks are superb.
Freshwater I've stuck with Teimco and Partridge for certain upright dancing caddis patterns, etc.
Anyone tinker with targus hooks as a substitute for Tiemcos?
-Paul
Since i am predominately tying steelhead flies now i would have to say that my favorite hooks are Daichi alec jackson spey hooks. I have been tying a lot of my flies for fishing lately on partidge bartleet cs10/1 hooks because they are very similar but quite a bit cheaper. Theres nothing like a traditional spey or dee hook for those classic flies!

Thanks guys.
I think Tiemco is still the top choice for most trout patterns.
We will ad any brand in a paricular model and size for a specific use if our staff and/or customers ask for it.
We have most TMC, most Targus, some Daiichi, Gami, Owner, EC, Mustad, Alec Jackson, Trey Combs and Partridge.
We can order almost any hook so let us know.

By far my favorite is the 2457. The same hook tiemco sales comes from other companies from the same plant in Japan (and is the same hook). Maruto (sp?) seems to be the best buy. Just compare a targus 2457 and a tiemco 2457. There is a reason you wont be able to tell the two hooks apart.Originally Posted by Bill Kiene

Do you mean the 2457 or the 2487, the scud style hooks?

If you are real price conscious, have bill order you a 1000 pack of targus. They retail for about $7 per 100 in a 1000 pack.Originally Posted by Adam Grace
