Hi Rick,
Nice report. Beautiful water.
Were you skating flies? What patterns worked best?
Cheers,
Lee
Hi Lee,
Tried skating some but not much luck - did have a few boils on top and Bill hooked one on a damp muddler.
Most of the time we were using either floating tips with weighted flies or type 3 tips. Generally we are fishing a main fly with a small trailer. Most of my fish came to the trailer which was mostly a size 8 bead head moss back (my favorite Klamath fly)!!
Rick,
Sounds good. Were the fish smaller than usual, or were they about average? Was there much competition on the river?
Looks like a great trip.
How many fish could you expect in a day?
Lee
Fishing was pretty tough as not much rain and not many fish had come in out of the Snake. I also think the runs may have been off a bit - the fish probably averaged a bit larger than normal - several 7 to 9# fish which were probably 2 year salt fish while most fish are usually 1-year fish of 4 to 6#.
I managed to hook 9 and land 3 - went a day with no grabs and on the last day had 4 fish on - when the fish are in you can expect very good fishing - in one week when it was on they had 101 steelhead hooked - so that can give you an idea of how it can fluctuate
