Aloha, I just recently joined this board, and was wondering how to post pictures. I tried to enter my user name, but was not allowed to post. I recently returned from a mainland trip to yosemite, arizona, idaho, montana, yellowstone, and wyoming. I have some nice pictures I would like to share. thanks any help would be great. Mems.

Aloha, thanks for the warm welcome. Tony nice mahi on the avatar. I went out to wailoa today and got some snapper and a weke (goat fish). I hooked an awa of about 20lbs. It took off like a rocket and threw the hook on the first jump. Those fish are just wild. I will read how to post pictures and then put my mainland trip story in the stream section. Mems.

Aloha I just got back from a great mainland trip with my wife and son. We went to Yosemite.

We fished the Dana and Lyell fork of the Toulomne river. It was very beautiful. Caught lots of small brookies and browns. We got to fish Arizona, Idaho, Montana, Yellowstone, and wyoming. Here is a picture of a remote little lake in Idaho.

Luke and I had a great time on this lake. I got a monster on the 3wt. Here are a couple Luke caught for dinner. West slope cutts.

It was a great trip. I had a good time on the Madison at the three dollar bridge, big bows there.
I love to saltwater fly fish here in Hawaii. Here are a couple of pictures of conventional gear fish I catch. This is of a 1/2 day in kona this spring.

And this is an 800lb blue I got about this time last summer.

Hope you like the pictures. this seems like a good board with nice flyfisherman on it. I hope to get a marlin on the fly soon. I have gotten mahi, ahi, aku, awa, ulua and a host of saltwater species, but no bill fish yet. I don't think a fly rod would have taken that marlin. It took 3 1/2 hours and broke the drag on a gold penn. I had to hold the reel with my hands when it made runs. Oh, well I will post stories and pictures now that I know how. Laterz, Mems.

Great pictures Don. Those big guys really beat you up and equipment too.

Maybe start with some spearfish on the fly before tackling one of those blues?

Hi Mems,..... Read and enjoy a lot of your stuff on Blanton's BB.

That's some Marlin in the photo . Hard to imagine one that big.... I got a Striped Marlin last year in Baja. It was only about 120 pounds and it whipped my butt.... You da man What type of tuna are those in the photo of your half day trip Do they take flies readily

Looks/sounds like you had a great trip over here.... I'm looking forward to more info about your fishing efforts.

I will be visiting Hawaii for my first time in about three weeks. I was invited by my roomates family to join them. I beleive that we will be visitng the big island for the majority of the trip. Since I am a guest I will not be leaving them to go fishing, but I would love the chance some time in the future.

The bluewater fishing seams very exciting and I wouold also love a chance to chase after some of the bonefish around the big island.

Do you ever fly fish for bonefish?

Aloha, lots to respond to. Tony, yeah I think short nosed spear fish are a good target for the fly rod. I had one hooked up on father's day on a popper fished on a spinning rod. It was about 60lbs and jumped 5 or 6 times. I fought it for about 1/2 an hour, but when I got it to the boat the hook bent and I lost it. That would have been good fun on the 12 wt. We don't see to many of them on the Hilo side. They are mostly on the kona side, but they would be a great fight on the fly.
Tuna in the 1/2 day picture. Those are ahi and aku, about 4-5 lbs each. We use them for live bait, but they are great fun on the fly rod. Yes they readily take a fly. I caught them on a popper with a spin rod. The ono will also take a fly, but you need wire leader. I have been using the tyger wire and it is pretty good stuff.
Comming to Hawaii. If you are on the Big Island give me a call or drop me an E-mail and I can meet you or at least help you find some good spots. Yes I have caught bonefish here on the Big Island. They are not in great numbers, but I do know some places where they hang out. The fish I catch and target is papio, juvenile jacks. The bluefinned trevally is called omilu and is a great fight on the fly rod. I got one this morning on the breakwall. I was using my new oama, baby goat fish fly. bob clouser tied it for me. It was an omilu of about 2lbs about 18 inches. They use their bodies and try to run into the rocks. Yesterday I hooked an awa, milkfish of about 20lbs but he threw the hook on his first jump. That fish peeled off about 100yards in 2 seconds. They are very fast, and tough to catch.
If any of you come to Hawaii, let me know and if the weather is good I can get one of my friends to take you out for some bluewater fishing at the bouys. We get ahi, aku, mahi, ono, rainbow runner on a regular basis with the fly rod. It all depends on what type of fish are there. Mahi on the fly is my favorite. Imagine a 5 foot rainbow. Well I will keep you guys posted. The oama are running right now, and I have a couple of more spots to hit next week before I have to go back to work teaching again. Laterz, Mems.
