    Default Hexagenia Mayflies

I experienced a nice Hex emergence at Lake Almanor this past Wednesday.

Tons of these large(hook size #6) yellow mayflies started to emerge around 8:30pm.

If you have not fished a Hex hatch you should take some time to do so. The next two weeks should be great at Lake Almanor, Butt Lake, Lake Natoma(above the lower American River)

Here are some pictures that show the emergence in stages

The emergent nymphs shuck, empty. The adults pop out too fast for me to take a picture.

    The newly emerged adult.

The spinner Hex. Either dead or very close to dead after mating and laying eggs.

The Hex hatch occours about 30-40 minutes before total darkness. This time period can be very exciting. Too bad the whole experience is short lived.

Anyone on this board have any cool picture of a Hex to share?

Check out this new hex pattern Adam & I have been working on. Realistic, huh?

Don't know if we'll fish it, takes too long to tie.

    Gregg,

One day, many years ago, some funny person stuck/impaled a live cricket on a hook and put it in the vise at the tying table out in the shop.

No one was sitting there and another customer walked by and just then the cricket kiicked one hind leg.

The customer said, "Pretty realistic, I'll take a dozen size 10s!"
