Default Catch Shad today on the Lower American River

The flow is 6,000cfs right now (5/29 Sunday) so you could catch Shad on the Lower American River today.

I would try driving around scouting today to see if you can find some people out there catching fish.

Be careful not to wade too deep with the flows and high water.

Top local Shad guide Bob Sparre hammered them at Sunrise from a boat with Dan Bacher of the Fish Snifer on Firday.

Dan reported that the fishing was good all day because the water is a little green.

I would try from Sailor Bar down stream to Goethe Park.

I heard they caught fish at the Gristmill/Herrington access last week and from Watt Avenue as well.

I did hear the flow will go back up to 8000 again on Moday, tomorrow 5/30 so today might be the only shot right now.

Just my opinion here - DON'T WADE !!!!

ANYTHING higher than 4000 CFS is asking to go for a swim , and even 4000 CFS is rough . With the river at 6000 CFS , stay away from the water - PERIOD

Just ask yourself one simple question ..... is fishing right now really worth risking your life ????

    David,

I think you are right on the money here.

I remember one summer the river ran 5,000cfs for months and we lost about a dozen people on the river that year.

I think that if you can stay less than knee deep it might be OK.

I think 5,000 is ok in some places. Like Bill said, don't go deep and work your double haul. I wonder how the Feather will be flowing this weekend?
