Too many fly fisherman simply "get by" with troubled casting. The better you cast the better you can present a fly to any fish. Better casting also requires less effort which means less fatigue which can deminish an enjoyable experience on the water.

Casting lessons are a huge help! Definately worth $40-$60.

Jeff Putnam is an excellent casting instructor who has helped many fly fisherman improve their casting and line control skills during his more than 10 years of instructing. Jeff promotes an efficient compact stroke, less movement and spent energy. Jeff teaches his customers to harness the power already built into the rod, not the simple 10 to 2 beginner technique. Jeff teaches his customers how to cast better by addressing the customers individual problems and explaining how to correct the mistakes. I can usually spot on of Jeff's students by their line control and a more efficient casting stroke.

I am not obligated at all to promote Jeff. He has helped my casting technique and knowledge while working with him at the shop. Jeff get results, I have seen and heard the results from his students.

If you do not have access to Jeff Putnam, do your homework on your local casting instructors. There are some good instrcutors out there, unfortunately there are also many whom you do not want to be taught by. Once a bad habit is learned it is difficult to correct.
