    Default Yuba River report.

    THE LOWER YUBA RIVER.

Cody and I had a chance to fish the Yuba on Friday.

It started out slow with only one hit using streamers.
The wheather was cold and wet at first.

We changed over to a Skwalla nymph fly and hooked a couple.

Cody with his first fish of the day.

This was my Biggest fish of the day.

The weather cleared and the sun came out and so did the Skwalla adults.

We change over to a Adult Skwalla pattern.
    And hooked 4 more fish.

Cody hooked this nice fish using a adult Skwalla pattern.

It was a beautiful day to be on the river .

Cody landed 2 fish and I landed 5 for the day. We missed around 10 fish.

All the fish that we hooked on dries were within 10 feet bank.
I had just as much fun with my Nikon as I did the Sage.

    We had a great time.

    Take care .

    Thanks .

It was a lot of fun.
We did see a juvenile Bald Eagle cruising up and down the river all day.
    Boy they are big !
I was surprised to see so many people on the river.
4 drift boats and 8-10 people walking .
Kieth was there with a couple of clients.
He is such a nice guy and a great guide.
If I went with a guide on the Yuba he would be my first choice.
Also Bill Lowe was also there with his clients.
I see him at least 5 times a year fishing the Yuba.
    He is also very cool.
They are the only two I would go with on the Yuba.
Jason has fished with Dave Armocido on a couple rivers and he is another great guide. Dave is a School teacher in Colusa and great with kids.
For a walk in guided trip Dave is the Man.
Some of the other Guides I have met are just too cocky.

    Take care .

    Default Adult skawlla pattern

Rob, that is a nice looking skawlla dry in one of those photos. Did you tie it yourself. Looks like it is a great floater, care to share the recipe? Thanks.

    Jason .

That Stone fly is a old Umpqua pattern.
    It has been discontinued.
It was my favorite fly for matching the Skwalla adults.
Its hard to see but looks like the real thing on the water.
The one I posted is thrashed .
It has a yellow thread on the hook with a strip of Yellow chenille on top of the hook. It has a egg sack on the tail with the body rapped with hackle. Turkey feather wing and a spun deer hair head.
I bought 4 dz at .50 each at the redding fly shop when they Discontinued them. I wish I could find more . I could tie everything but the spun deer head . I'm not much of a tier.
    Here is a better picture.

    Take care.

Rob, that spun deerhair head is really no more difficult than the rest of the fly. Really. Judging by the appearance of the fly, all the tyer did was hold a stack of deerhair in place, with the points facing the rear of the fly, and cinched up a couple wraps to make the butt end of the hair flair. The tyer then added a couple more wraps, moved the thread in front of the hair, and did a couple of half hitches. The tyer then proceeded to spin and tie off hair one or two times in front of the first stack of hair, then trimmed with very sharp scissors or a razor blade. If you're interested in learning to spin hair, I can post some instructions. . . . Don't let the perceived difficulty of creating that hair head cause you to go without a proven pattern.
