Yuba Report

Fished the Yuba the other evening with Adam. We each hooked into a small trout swinging streamers. The clarity is somewhat limited, with some sediment still in the water however. Hopefully with some sunny days it'll clear up. Anyone else hit the Yuba lately?

Fished the Yuba the last 2 days. BWO hatch coming off around 1:00 and lasting about an hour. Fish definately keyed in when the flies start coming off. Got 4 to hand on Monday, largest around 18" . Only had a 16" ldr yesterday . Fished a 16 CDC wing BWO emerger on top and in the film.

Fished on Sunday the 16th myself. Water vis. was at about 3 feet. One of the few rare days where I had the riffle, river left, under the the bridge for about 200 yds or so all to my self for a few hours.

Stuck a nice fish swinging an olive zonker early in the day, but did not land it. Water needed to be a few shades lighter where I was at. Should be prime by this Sunday. Flows out of Smartville were at 1040, Deer Creek is at 24..!! Perfect..! Damn.!! I'm on call this weekend..!!

Anyway, catch some for me fella's. Let me know how you guys did.

Did ya see any skwalla stones come off..? Just curious, I was there from 7am till about 12:30. Flows on my side were a bit fast, Were you fishing a slower section above..?

I was actuall fishing downstream of the bridge. It is not a real slow part of the river but it's on an inside bend. The fish were mostly within 20 - 30 ft of the bank. A lot of fish rising 5 - 10 ft from the bank. I didn't see any Skwala adults. I did turn a couple of rocks and did see a couple of nymphs. Not bad since I only turned over 3 or 4 rocks.

My boys and I like to swing streamers. In the past when the water gets some color we have used a size 8 black marabou leech, with sink tip . I try to slow the swing down by feeding line as the fly swings. Jason my oldest son likes to fish the slower water . He will fish the seam where fast water meat the slow. If the water is real deep he will cast ,then count to 30 and let the sink tip sink. Then he will strip it in real slow.
Also big wool-head sculpins work good when water clarity is poor.

Gregg and I only fished from 4:00 to dark on Saturday. I wished that we were there from 10am-2pm. That time of the day is usually the warmest and the bugs become more active. I am looking forward to fishing the Skwalla hatch this year. Last year I missed the fun large Skwalla dry flies. I was lucky enough to fish the Yuba during the march brown hatch with local guide Keith Kaneko. We had a good time. The winter fishing on the Yuba is perfect to satisfy a need for proper trout fishing. The second picture is of Gregg with his little guy from last Saturday. My fish was also that size, not huge but still a rod shake is better than watching TV.








Notice the colored water in the first picture. I hope the clarity and flows are nuch better now.

Using streamers is a great way to get kids into fish . Cody and Jason hooked these fish on the Yuba by swinging a green Zonker.
