This is the fly fishing legend, Hal Janssen's boat used for decades on Lake Almanor.

I am very familiar with the original Boston Whalers that I saw all over the World in my fly fishing travel business.

I have seen a few 11' Whalers, hundreds of the 13', and thousands of the 17' Montauk, but I know of only three of the 15' models.

Veteran fly fisher, Ted "Doc" Cedar has one and is on his third motor now.

I am sure Hal has it all set up for fly fishing in Stillwater and it is a very nice size for 1 or 2 angers.

Hal and his lovely wife Jane played an important part, back in the day, with most fly shops with their extremely efficient

fly fishing tackle distribution business, run out of a small building in their backyard in Santa Rosa, California.

With Hal's amazing knowledge of fly fishing tackle and Jane's work ethic, they were a powerful team.

From our shop in Sacramento, we could call in an order to them in Santa Rosa, and get it UPS the next day

with almost always a 100% fill rate. This was unheard of service.

I met Hal about 50 years ago when I was working at Sports Unlimited on Arden Way in Sacramento, California.

Hal would stop by and visit with us at the store after he had been fishing early on the Lower American River.

I think he would come in a change from his fishing clothes to a sports coat and tie to call on his accounts representing Bianchi

leather goods, like holsters and belts. etc. Hal has an infectious personality so we all considered him one of us almost immediately.

After Work, back then, when I was learning to fly fish, I was at Watt Avenue, above the bridge, and ran into Hal. There were

many fall steelhead and Half-pounders in the river in those days and there was a lot of caddis activity than evening. Hal was naturally

trying to help me and came to look at what I was using. I had a fiberglass 9' #9 line rod with a type 2 sink rate shooting head and a

#6 Silver Hilton steelhead fly. Hal said, "What are you fishing for, King Salmon? You only need a trout rod with a floating line."

Hal was using a #3 or 4 line, soft fiberglass rod with a very slow intermediate line and a "caddis emergers?" He was about 20 years

ahead of almost everyone else, even back then.
