    Default Rockfish on the Fly

I got this brown rockfish at the Doran Beach jetty in Bodega Bay. I was using a 7wt with 30ft of t-8 and a pink Clouser. I got him on the last cast of the 1 hour sesh, jigging it under a submerged boulder. I realized after hooking him that a 9wt would have been better. I barely winched him out from under the rock. It’s crazy how such a small rockfish could pull so hard. A largemouth this size would get skated across the surface to the bank without a fight.

I’ve found rockfish are really easy to catch. I’m surprised less people fly fish for them, even though tons of fly fishers live in the Bay Area and have easy access to good rockfish spots.

NorCal guide, Fred Gordon, has taken many trips to Shelter Cove, way up on the California north coast.

Living in Dunsmuir, he goes in August when his local fishers are slow and it is cool on the coast.

He takes his skiff up there and fishes fairly close to shore along the rocks.

Fred told me he catches lots of Gray Cod with an 8 weight rod, Teeny-type fast sinking line and a Clouser.

After many years of going up there, he has figured out that the fish like a long, smooth, continuous retrieve.

There are some fly fishers who run out to the islands off of Southern Cal in larger boats.

They catch Calico Bass, Yellowtail, Bonita, and White Sea Bass, which sounds pretty cool to me.

It is old that more fly fishers do not do this kind of saltwater inshore and estuary fishing, from a boat.

That's one of the things I love about saltwater. All the fish pull HARD!
