Hopefully, it is like a cycle where it will come back some.

This is July 6th, so what is the longest a Shad run has gone on the Lower American River?

I’m not on the water nearly as much as some, but over the last 30 years the latest I remember was early August.

I’m still finding fish in the last 40 minutes of light, but it’s certainly tailing off. This was the first year in memory that I didn’t get any shad on the surface - didn’t even see many on top.

Could the lower numbers be related to the low water of 2021-22 maybe?

I’ve gotten them up to mid August during the last hour of light and there are always small males hanging around until Fall. I got a dozen swinging for steelhead in October.

Jeff Putnam likes to skate caddis dries in the evening on smooth tail outs.

Wanna guess who first showed them to him, back when all his hair was dark and, well, I still had some ?

Over my long career of selling fishing tackle near the Lower American River, I got feedback from someone

in September who was fishing a caddis dry for Half-pounders and caught a Shad.

I was on the river about 15 years ago with Jeff while he was skating a caddis dry in a tail out catching Shad.
