Fly lines for Kirman Lake

I'm planning a trip to Kirman next week and am trying to figure out what kind of line to bring. This will be my first time there and the information that I keep finding is that the fish tend to be on the deeper side. I figured a full sinking type 3 and a float line would be my best bet. Has anyone tried indicator fishing the lake before? I couldn't find any information on any successful indicator fishing there. I'll be packing my fish finder to gather more information on depth, temperature, etc as well since there isn't anything on that either.

I had success using a clear intermediate and stripping an olive Bugger.
This was a few years ago. Lots of scuds in there so you could try a scud imitation.
Haven’t tried indacator fishing there. Maybe someone will chime in and help you with that.

People who fish lakes a lot usually have 3 or 4 different fly lines:


Weight forward floater - for dries, emergers, and indicator chironomid fishing

Weight forward true intermediate line (0.5" per sec) Not transparent. For under the chop but pretty shallow.

Weight forward clear slow sinking line (2" per sec) is an extremely popular and effective line for lake fishing.

Weight forward full sinking type 3 or 4 line



In a boat, we usually have 2 to 4 complete outfits set up

Thanks for the replies. I'm planning on biking in and spending two nights and hitting up Poore Lake after Kirman. I feel like I'm already at capacity with all the bags on the bike and a backpack so I can only bring one rod and an extra spool. I feel pretty confident that the gear I'm bringing will work but was curious to see what others have used.

Most recent Kirman report from Ken's in Bridgeport. They are usually very helpful.

Only had one report from Kirman this week and we were told it was pretty tough with only 2 or 3 fish being caught. If you’re heading up that way I would be packing some small leech patterns, scud patterns, soft hackles, seal buggers and maybe some stillwater nymphs.

Well that doesn't look too promising. The weather seems to be dropping fast too so I'll probably just stick to Kirman.

When the sun shines the scuds go deep, but even a cloud overhead will bring them to surface, An I line covers both situations. I use birds nests unweighted and with beads, Easier than switching lines/rods.

Years ago Andy used to fish it really early in the morning until the sun hit the water then left for other fisheries.

I never go to Kirman with an intermediate and type 3.
