    READY TOO RUMBLE !!!!!!

These Cam Sigler Poppers are heading to Mag Bay to hopefully get eaten by a few Marlin. They have a double 6/0-6/0 hook connected with 62lb Malin single strand wire and a leader with 80lb mono. These are for a customer, I'll be tying up a few for my trip in 9 days to La Ventana.

Just heard there were Wahoo eating purple trolled Rapala's off Cerralvo Island. One boat landed 4 decent fish and lost 2. Maybe, just maybe, they might hit a purple/white Cam Sigler popper. Tease them up with a live Skipjack then have the fly ready to cast. Also a few Yellowfin tuna in the area along with some big Roosters and Dorado.

Good luck Jay. I think Wahoo on fly is one of the hardest fish to hook-up, hardest of most tuna/mackerel for sure. They're so fast and rarely hang around in one spot long enough to get a fly in front of them. Post a picture and tell the tale if you get one or more.

I've been tying dark green crabs for a Cuba trip next week.

The stone crabs close to the mangroves are dark with lighter legs, compared to the crabs out on the sand flats.
I'm bringing both. Gotta play the game at least.

Well, as usual, I tied lots of flies based on the outfitters pre-trip list. Showed two completely full crab boxes to my guides, they looked, frowned, and said what else you have. I don't understand why it's so difficult for outfitters to provide a more accurate fly list based on what their guides actually want. But it didn't matter, I still scored big time with major league snappers like this ....

    DLJeff

That is one of the best photos I have seen in a while.

Would be cool on the cover of a SW magazine.

We have lots of snappers under our docks right now in Sebastian, FL.

Write up a report of your Cuba trip.

Thanks Bill. We like to goof around, spoofing the hero shots we see so often these days. Those little snappers and jacks can be a real irritant sometimes. You find a good fish, make what you think is a decent cast, start a slow strip, the target fish moves, the line goes tight and suddenly gets all wiggly jiggly and you know exactly what happened as you watch the big fish you were trying for swim off and disappear.

As for a trip report - it was good, not great. We had a little weather front come through in the middle of the trip which seemed to put the fish off. The bonefish schooled up in deeper water. Still found the odd permit but usually when we weren't expecting to. Tarpon were also less numerous than we hoped. On the plus side, we found some above average snook and I got one mongo cuda that had the nerve to eat half a decent snapper I caught off a coral head one afternoon. The glutton hung around while I got out my 10wt, tied on a long green cuda fly and made one cast. Havana and Cuba in general is struggling right now, more than in the past. The friendly attitudes we enjoyed in the past on the street felt strained.

Love it when I show the guide my flies meticulously tied for months before the trip and he pulls some crusty thing that was stuck in a piece of foam on the boat and ties it on...and it catches fish.

Oh...and another thing, you need to hold that fish out at arm's length in front of you.

    Great post/report DLJ.

I am always hoping for the best for the people of Cuba.

Even with Democracy and free market capitalism the greedy, powerful usually end up with 90% of the wealth.

Sadly, these people will always be poor because of greed.

When I was in Havana and out fishing with Avalon the people seemed happy but poor, doing their best to survive.

Yeah, another socialist / communist experiment that didn't work out as planned. The people we meet fishing are fantastic, hard working, fun loving...their situation is bleak for many. Removal of all restrictions with the US would help but it would probably change, possibly ruin, the quaint historical and natural attractions of Cuba.
