First off, Carl has been is one of the veteran North Coast Winter Steelheaders for about the last 50 years.

Retail this could be $1,000 worth of the coastal winter run Steelhead flies and boxes.

Lastly, Kiene's bought flies from Carl for a long time and they are extremely well-tied.

If you ever want to fish the tidewater of Nor Cal, Oregon or Washington for salmon and/or Steelhead these are the real deal.

When I moved from California to Florida I sold (gave away) about $4,000 worth of Umpqua trout flies for a few hundred dollars.

Also, I donated about 200 great old books from the 1970s as books are dead.

This is a good time to unload lots of old stuff you have that in 10 years nobody will want.

Looks like there were some Bosses in there. Years ago, Tom Hayter would take me out on the American and the Yuba and 99% of the time we would have a Boss and a Prince nymph tied on. Indicators weren't a thing yet so we just tried to get a good drift. No swinging either. I bet he would have loved that though. I was a twenty something at the time and I think he liked having me around because I could keep up with him.

Black is the number one color for many wet flies.

Black is one of the top colors for tidewater Winter Steelhead and Fall Salmon.

Black is one of the top colors for up river Steelheading.

Someone did a large book with photos of hundreds of popular Steelhead flies.

I counted all the different colors to see what was popular.

Black was the Number One color.

The famous Nor Coast fly fisher of the Great Generation, Bill Schaadt, had a favor fly for tidewater Steelhead and Salmon.

It was basically a black body with a Grizzly hackle.

My friend and mentor, Al Perryman, has lived on the Middle Rogue River for about 30 years now.

His favorite Steelhead fly on the Rogue River is a black unweighted size 4/6 Classic winged wet fly.

He uses a 5/6 line Spey rod and a floating line most of the time.

Veteran Steelhead fly fisher, Joe Shirshac, used the Boss fly ( Black) for Steelhead and salmon.

Joe also preferred a black streamer for Stripers.

Back in the day Art Dedini, who had the fly shop, in Ferndale, had a glass gallon jug filled with water and silt. When someone, he did not know, would come in and ask for fluorescent orange flys Art would shake up the jug and drop in a fluorescent orange fly then drop in a black one. The black fly was much more visable.Black absorbs all the light. Lots of wisdom to be gained by hanging out there.

    Noyo

, I always used a Black boss first thing in the morning, either for Salmon or steelhead, after the sun came up i switched to the Flaming boss, or the gold comet.
