Default Recommended reading for all fly fishers?

I have a mild case of ADD so reading is very difficult for me, especially those thick books.

I did gather a pretty large library of books on fly fishing because I was interested to learn more.

I would try to read as much as you can of the real classic books that are out there and really cheap now.

Thanks Bill.some essential reading there, straight up my favourite book on the passion that is fly fishing and one I have no hesitation to re-read anytime is Thomas McGuane's "The Longest Silence".Nick Lyons,Norman Maclean are other favourites,as is John Gierach.
Please note that I'm not including books about how to fly fish or books about fish in particular as I regard them more as reference books.
Best regards and looking forward to others contributions to this thread.

    Thumbs up Authors/books

I'm a big fan of anything written by now deceased Russell Chatham. He covers all of the west coast, not all fly fishing but that is his primary subject. His style is alternately humorous, then serious. Lots of history of his life and fly fishing. I've read all his books several times and still enjoy them.

    Thanks Darian,

Russell Chatham was a big part of the fly fishing history, on the Nor Cal coast particularly.

Naturally, he was interviewed in the great film, "Rivers of a Lost Coast".

His book, "The Angler's Coast" is still highly prized.

I think 'Dark Waters' is one of the best books I've read ever- fishing or otherwise.

Some other good ones I still pull down and read:

    Joe Humphreys - 'Trout Tactics'

Leonard Wright - 'Fly Fishing Heresies'

John Shewey - all of his stuff

Charles Brooks - all of his stuff

Steve Raymond - 'Year of the Trout' is my fave but they are all good

    Ken Hanley

    Gary Borger - Presentation (classic)

Here is some more good info from an old friend:

    "Hi Bill,

I enjoyed your recent post about Lefty Kreh and the mention of Mark Sosin, and Joe Brooks.

I grew up reading folks like Lefty Kreh, Mark Sosin, Lee Wulff, Ted Trueblood, Jim Bashline, etc. Then I started reading folks like Charles Brooks, David Hughes, Mike Fong, etc.

In recent years, I've been going back to the early classics, such as those written by Joe Brooks, Ray Bergman, etc.
Thanks again for those books I got from you when you were decluttering prior to the move to Florida; they've been helpful in my quest to understand the history and development of our sport of flyfishing!!!

Happy Holidays to you, your wife, and all of your family!!!

    Glenn"

"The River Why" by David James Duncan. This thread reminded me of it; going to read it again.
