    Default Mauna Loa Eruption

Went to Kauai for my birthday and Mauna Loa erupted that night. Stayed for four days and came home last night. here are some pics. we took last night and this morning and some my son Luke took and one of my friends got. Pretty spectacular. looks like it will slow down before it cuts off saddle road.

I really like Luke's pictures as they show good perspective with the trees and rocks in the foreground.

In all the years I lived in Hawaii, I never ventured to the big island. I probably spent more time on the North shore and hanging out around Waikiki and Ala Moana, doing my thing....surfing
It was great being a kid back then late 40's, too young to understand 50's, 60's was the good years growing up.

Sounds like the volcano is slowing down, I am bummed as I am a self admitted lava junkie and just no time to get there this month. We just got back from 9 days in Panama which had been planned for a year, the Mrs. was not going to entertain the notion of bagging that in favor of chasing lava.

Yes it is pretty much over now. We had a big influx of tourists and crowded restaurants. You can still see some glowing at night, but some people are stupid enough to try and walk on the new lava. It was pretty spectacular and one day Mauna Loa will cover large portions of the Big Island, we are still under construction. For now the surf is up and looks like I will have a window to go get some fish for X-mas.
