    Default Middle Rogue Steelhead Friday

Back at it late this afternoon before a storm moving in tonight. Swinging caught and released these two females of 18” and 23” all within 10 miles of the house.

Any scuttlebutt on the poor half-pounder return this year? Spent 5 days in Agness in early October and counted catch on one hand. I saw poor netting at Huntly Park census but no one offered an explanation.
    Thanks,

According to locals the timing 'down there' in the lower Rogue is mid-Aug through Sept for Half-pounders.

Just called one of my mentors, Al Perryman, living up on the middle Rogue river for 20-30 years.

He said it is cold and raining up there, 46 degrees. Up there October is usually the big month.

He said that they had a poor Half-pounder run in the lower Rogue river this Fall.

Less that half of the normal run so that is why it was slow.

Al said they had a good early run of adult Summer Run Steelhead in the middle river this Fall.

Then it slowed down for the later part of October.

From the 4th of July till early November Al fishes the middle Rogue river every day, very early AM.

He has done this for many years......

Over the years, when he was guiding up there in the middle Rogue river with a drift boat I got to go out with him.

He ran the boat and I fished one day and I landed 17 adult Summer Run Steelhead.

If you go out with a good guide or a top local angler and listen to them you can have good days.

All I have going for me is that most of my life I was a good fly caster, so I listens and paid attention.

Over my lifetime I was blessed to fly fish with many top anglers and top guides.

One of my best things I can tell people is to get a good outfit and work on your fly casting.

Then join a local fly club or fishing club. Go one their monthly outings.

Today we have tons of great YouTube free videos on the sport of fly fishing.

Partner up with someone and go with a good fly fishing guide.

In Sacramento Captain Andy Guibord has probably mentored more newbies than any one else but Joe Shirshac.

Here's what I'm talking about for this year's half-pounders, ODFW data:

Seems to me that this doesn't bode well.
