Default Anyone here know Mike McIntyre who did lots of rafting down rivers?

I think Mike worked for the State of California and I think he was part Native American?

He was a very powerful stocky guy with a great personality.

Mike had a huge raft that he took down some of the forks of the American river.

My dad and I and others went down the South Fork of the American river with Mike one day.

He used a 9' #6 weight rod with a sink-tip and a black weighted Woolly Bugger.

I think he caught some nice chrome good size Rainbows in between "scared to death" rapids.

He started floating the Deschutes river where he did that upper part for the stone fly hatch with Sacramento friends.

Have not heard about him in years and it would be nice to know if he is still with us.

Bill, I knew Mike. Back in the eighties, I went on two trips that he put together. One was a fly-in to the Brooks River in Alaska. The other was a float down the Deschutes River. He did indeed work for the State of California, and he was quite a colorful character. I have often wondered what ever happened to him, as well.

Indeed he was. If I were a betting man, I would wager that he ended up in the Pacific Northwest. Or possibly Alaska.

    Here is Mike's post again:

"i think of bill and his family often and well. a friend i took down the Deschutes on a rafting trip sent me the forum. sure enough, i am still above ground at 83 and recently rowed a crew of my son,s friends down the deschutes...disabled marine vet who can,t walk very well but can row like crazy. lol.
i live with my darling wife of 35 yrs on the central coast of Oregon. we live a quarter mile from the ocean. my gills required that i return to the salt water.
have conducted guided trips all over the western usa for the past 40 yrs. retired now. good thing. our rivers on the whole oregon coast are closed due to global warming and its impact on the salmon runs. we can still crab and dig clams so that is nice.
hello to all my sac friends. much more later. Semper Fi, mike mcintyre."

Mike just called me from his home in Florence, Oregon and we had a nice long conversation catching up on the last ~30 years.

He retired from the State of California at 58 and did a lots moving around since then.

They had a home down on the tip of Baja just up on the Pacific side at Pescadero.

He said the surf fishing was very good.

He did a lot of float trips in remote Alaska too.

Right now Mike said the rivers in Oregon are closed to protect the salmon.

He said the clamming and crabbing is very good though.

In the summer at Florence, OR the high temperatures are in the 60s with fresh air.

    Bill,

I'm quite certain this reunion you just experienced with Mike was, as you said "This is just amazing.....".

Re-connecting with an old friend REALLY helps the ole' gray matter between our ears.

Far too often we lose contact with wonderful old friends amongst the daily grind and the trials and tribulations that life throws at us nowadays.

I'm so happy that you both re-connected, especially here on your forum Bill, where we could witness it !

Good job Bill and Mike !!!!

All the best to both of you,

    Bob

Yes BS, It is sad we have to get so stinking old to really appreciate life.

I feel very fortunate to have met hundreds of amazing people in my lifetime.

There are dozen more people that I have lost touch with over the years too.

Would be great to find some of them......

About 15 years ago we had a reunion of some of the guys who worked at Sports Unlimited and Tower of Sports.

Somehow many of us got back together at my fly shop and had a great day/evening together after ~40 years?

One came all the way from Missouri? and another from Oregon with their wives.

We decided that why our reunion happened was the fact at our young ages we had so much fun working together.

At that time around Sacramento we were all hunting and fishing with great success.

After the reunion one of the guys had a friend who was a private investigator try to find one of our bosses.

Tom Baird, owner of the Tower of Sports, was at the reunion so we needed to get hold of Lou Pia.

They found him up in Squirm on the Washington coast so everyone got to call him and chat.

    "This was just amazing................. too"
