About 35 years ago we took a very large group to El Pescador Lodge out on Ambergris Cay off of Belize City, Belize.

We stopped overnight in New Orleans on recommendation of Walt Bennett, who had been there before.

We had lots of advice from others on what to do in New Orleans and it was a big part of the trip.

Walt told me to go to Pat O'Brien's and order a Hurricane cocktail.

Not being a big drinker I downed the hole thing. After a while when we stood up and left I was perfectly, fantastically drunk.

We walked down Bourbon Street for the total experience. I think I had a good time...?

I think it was $7.50 and you could keep the engraved glass back then.

"There are two kinds of rum in the classic Hurricane Cocktail Recipe: white rum and dark rum. Two ounces of each in a single Hurricane makes it plenty potent, so you’re going to need to be careful with this one! Passion fruit juice and orange juice make up the juice portion of the drink. Grenadine and simple syrup are added in for additional sweetness. Juice from 1/2 lime finishes it off. It’s served in a Hurricane glass full of ice, and it’s garnished with orange and a maraschino cherry."

The next morning we had those nice pastries with powdered sugar, Beignets, and good strong coffee by the Mighty Mississippi river.

I recognize that fountain behind the hurricane - and had a couple of evenings where it was that blurry by the end of the night. Had a co-worker fall into it - which isn’t easy because you have to climb over 2 railings to get there.

How was the Quarter? I’d heard it had gotten kind of bad since Covid, miscreants and scofflaws were supposedly more prevalent than before. Love that city, though, and really need a barbecued oyster fix.

New Orleans has changed. My relatives were freaked out about walking down there so I took an uber. Bourbon is still bourbon street but walking back to your car you can get mugged or shot and the police do nothing to perps. Lots of homeless living under the causeway. Didn't get uptown but they say it is bad there as well. All my relatives except one live out side of town in Covington or Pass Christian. They blame it on the mayor but it was always the school system at the heart of poverty in Louisiana.

All big cities are getting very dangerous now.

A few years ago we had a birthday party at the Spaghetti Factory in down town Sacramento.

While leaving in a big group, thank God, we were threatened by a homeless man asking for money.

It got real close to a serious physical confrontation.

We had enough young men in our party that he would have lost the battle.

I think it would be a good idea to move far away from almost any large city in America.

Even in South Dakota where they have only two larger cities, Sioux Falls and Rapid City.

30 years ago they were both very peaceful towns but now illegal drugs are everywhere.

Fire Fighters are packing 9mm Glock pistols and get free training and free ammo.

I guess millions of Americans have no idea what is going on in our country now.
