    Never heard of this one.

I know Carl Blackledge fished the night time "worm hatch" for big Tarpon in the FL Keys for many years.

    Hi Bill
Every flyfishing striper fisherman in the NE has probably fished the worm hatch (Nereis sp).
Usually takes place in May in backwaters over soft substrates in late afternoon or evening.
I know of the tarpon worm hatch but it's not to be confused with what we striper fisherman call the "worm hatch"!

Thanks for this fascinating information CapeCod139.

What is the organism? Worm or aquatic insect? Hex nymph emergers? Small Eel?

Why haven't I ever heard of it?

Here is a great video of the "Cinder worm" alive and swimming.

This looks fantastic......and the East Coast has lots of Stripers compared to the West Coast now.

I have read about the Striper fishing on the East Coast for about 60 years now and never heard a word about this Worm.

It's a marine polychaet. Genus Nereis.
Nereis limbata is the cinder worm
Type in worm hatch and you will get mucho info on the striper worm hatch during the full and new moons in May, sometines into June in the Northeast.
It's after the hatch which is why my flies are for sale!
Plus I've cut back a bit on flyflshing due to age and right shoulder surgery last Aug at Cape Cod Hosp
Hope this clears things up. We were circling the same polychaet rise!

    Bill,
I have fished the "worm hatch" at least a dozen times, however when fishing at night we call it the Shrimp hatch, it's when the shrimp leave their hiding places in the sponges and start swimming all around and the tarpon are on their tails chasing them. it's real hoot to be in the middle of that LOL

Must be wild Carl when you hook a big Tarpon at night.

Night fishing can be very unique.

We night fished the mouth of the American river and the mouth of the Feather river years ago, 1970s, for Stripers.

I knew a group of young "commando" fly fishers who night fished from anchored prams for Stripers in lots of different places.

Al Perryman, Cal Guinn , Al Fong, Larry Cullen, Forrest Oldham and Jim Potter were way ahead of the game in the 1960s.

They mostly fly fished Nor Cal for Shad, Stripers, Steelhead, and salmon.
