    Default Dillon creek advice

Hey all, I'm going to the Dillon creek area later this month and I'm curious if anyone has some knowledge about the area. I've never been there but plan on setting up a hammock and mostly doing dries. I'll have a nymph rod too but I'm not sure if I should expect anything 9wt worthy. Any insight is much appreciated. Also is it c&r?

Sept/Oct/Nov is the time for Steelhead migration up there.

After talking with the leading expert on the upper 1/3 of the Klamath river, Bruce Porter, it sounds too early at Dillon Creek.

I think you need to camp down on the cool Pacific Ocean and fish the first riffle above the Hwy 1 bridge on the north side at Klamath Glen

at "dark thirty AM". Try the last few hours in the evening too. Floating line, tapered 9' 1x leader with any dark #10 wet fly or nymph.

Maybe try some surf perch fishing on the beach?

Are you fishing the Klamath? Or Dillion Creek itself?

If you're fishing the river, it's probably a couple weeks early for any half-pounders up that high on the river. But you never know. There may be some summer-run steelhead around.

I have no idea if there are resident fish in Dillion Creek. But it wouldn't surprise me, as it's a good sized stream with year round flows. The campground there is cool.

I believe you can keep two hatchery steelhead in the Klamath. However, I have heard from numerous people that they are not very good eating once they're in the river. That being said, I've never caught a clipped steelhead on the Klamath.

Keep in mind that the water will be very warm up there (mid 70's) and maybe some algae. Fishing is not fun when the algae is floating downstream. It fouls your hook every cast. Also, some of the algae is toxic. Wet wading is not advised. You'll end up with lots of tiny little red sores on your legs.

Good luck. I'll be up there mid-September.

Please check the regs as I believe Dillon Creek is closed to fishing. The main Klamath in that area will be very warm and likely have very few, if any, adult fish at this time of the year. It's a beautiful place to camp but poor timing for fishing. Sept./Oct. is better timing for steelhead and salmon.

Had two reports that the Rogue river is having a good run of Half-pounders.
