In 1970s when Hat Creek below the Power House 2 was one of the top streams in America I got to fish "near" the famous Richard May.

I was told by a friend that the guy above us and below that first riffle was Dick May.

He was casting across the stream and dead drifting something in the surface that the fish were eating, nicely.

Back then Hat Creek was deep and had amazing hatches. It was noted for being difficult for most.

It had 'smoking hot' wild Rainbow trout and massive Brown trout too.

Later, at an opportune time, we asked May what he was using and he showed us a dark round floating snail imitation.

I think he was fishing a nice small cane rod too.

Google "Richard May California Trout" to get an idea how import he has been and still is to our trout fisheries in California.
