Thread: leaders for shad

    Default leaders for shad

    How "leader shy" are shad?

My guess is : not much.

    For swinging on a T200 style sinktip , I'm building a 4 foot leader. : 1 foot 20# .017" Maxima, then 3 feet 10# .012 " plain mono. Pretty simple.

    Anything wrong with this setup?

    Thanks,

    Pete

    Sinking leader ideas:

Fluorocarbon monofilament is supposed to sink faster than nylon monofilament.

FC is supposed to not refract light.

On floating lines most use long leaders to get the fly down.

On medium sinking lines a 6 foot leader might be an average length.

On very fast sinking lines/tips a short leader is common, about 4 feet total.

After I tie up a leader I usually attach the fly and hook it to something and give it a good long pull test.

A friend told me about this because he learned it from Mike Monroe.

Mike said he would rather it failed then than on a fish of a lifetime.

overall that should be good, but with the low water in the American I use Fluoro and go lighter on the tippet.

Mines simple too- 2 ft 20# maxima with a loop and clinch knot 2-3 ft of tippet to that.

Good idea - butt section with a loop - easy tippet change to whatever you might need
