Russell,

Windfinder will help with picking a good day for tide and wind. Russo's Marina / Bethel Island location works as a good average for tide timing and wind. The free internet version has more stuff than the phone version.

I would suggest a day that forecasts as less than 8mph for a start. Usually, it is less windy early. And, there is more boat traffic, competition for spots, and dirty water (already been fished) as the day wears on.

A good starter trip tide would be, on the water 2 hours before High, and then fish as long as you want on the outgoing.

I use a Type 3 line on the edges of the flats and weed lines, and just 6-7 feet of 20# Big Game (#15 if clear, or small flies).

I have been fly fishing the Delta for 30 years and I am still learning something on every trip.

Have fun getting started.

Dan
