Here’s a fly I tied this morning for Joe Shirshac. I tied it based on his description of the shad flies he used to tie for Kiene’s. I hope I did it justice!

That's pretty much the old Shad fly Joe tied for Kiene's and lots of old sporting goods stores and bait-n-tackle shops.

50 years ago at the Oak park fire house it was tied on a #4 and #6 Wright & McGill "Eagle Claw" 1197 N hook.

We used the #4 on the dirty Sacramento river and the #6 on the clear lower American river.

Back then it had a small chenille collar between the front white hackle and the bead chain eyes.

One pattern had a chartreuse collar and the other was hot orange.

That's it Jeff..............but with a white rooster chicken hackle collar.

I think you new adaptation would work better now than old one.

We are so lucky to have the clear lower American river running right throw town.

It is still one of the best, close, clear and convenient Shad rivers in the Valley for wading.

PS:I still want to see some pictures of wading at the mouth of the Feather river.

I tweaked the fly based on input from Andy (added silver Mylar rib and red chenille collar). He helped me name it the Sugarshack!

Went down to the Log Hole this afternoon, no shad showing yet. The water is very low, lower than shad time last year. Also, there seems to be some trees missing. Lots of trees. Deforestation like. Anyone know why the county would take out so many trees along the parkway?

Maybe removing the "cover" for the homeless?

    Maybe a disease?

Yes I saw that to. There was some big cotton woods they cut down. I left there feeling sad. Not a fan of what the state or whoever does river restoration. Or whatever this project was. Maybe to get rid of invasive plants? Sad
