Default Jeff’s 2022 AR Shad Reports

I know everyone is chomping at the bit for the shad to show up. I haven’t gone out to do some scouting but I predict they will be in the American by mid-April. I caught my first shad on 4/13 last year and I think they will start showing up around the same time. My fly boxes are full of my favorite flies and I’m tweaking a fly that I named the VSPT (Victoria Secret Pheasant Tail) that worked for me last year. If it works again this year (a lot of shad patterns I’ve experimented with are one-hit wonders and only work for a season) you might be seeing this fly in your local fly shop. Stay tuned for further updates!

Welcome back, Jeff. Like oak pollen and wild turkeys strutting in the yard, your reports are a sure sign of spring. I hope we have enough water for a good shad run this year, but with little snow-pack I fear it will be a repeat of last season. I look forward to your reports. Thanks

I remember that our family home's cherry tree was full of fruit when the Shad were being caught down at the "Minnow Hole" on the

Sacramento river in south Sacramento. The Stripers and Shad all come up the river about the same time.

Bill reported that shad are at Verona so from my own experience shad show up within two weeks on the American. Because we currently have low flows (just dropped to 1000 cfs this morning) shad will hang around in the lower river longer. Get your shad gear ready!
