Thread: Jeff’s 2022 AR Shad Reports

Bill, Not nearly that far up. Basically Sutter County waters. The fields are getting pumped out and the water clarity got bad today. That's fishing, great one day and not so good the next. The only way to know is to go. We also had quite the day yesterday. My friend hooked a sturgeon on a shad fly. The thing came right out of the water and it looked to be hooked in the mouth by the way it was fighting. The fight only lasted for a short while until it broke off. A short time later a guy below us hooked a spring chinook and it came 4 feet of the water before it came loose. On any given day at our spot we have caught shad, stripers, salmon and now sturgeon all on shad flies. That is the biggest difference between the Sac and the American.

Took the mini out mid-river this morning. After putting the mini in the water, I drove up to the parking lot and Chops and Jared pull up. They told me that they were going on a float with Mary Ellen. Mary Ellen drives up with no boat in tow so everyone is wondering if she forgot her boat. A few minutes later Andy drives up towing Mary Ellen’s boat ( Andy used it yesterday with clients and got off the water late). We all had a laugh about it.

I rowed up to the top and only got one in the first 3 hours. I saw that Don Morris aka the UPS Man had come up river in his canoe and anchored below me and was hooking up. I drifted down and anchored above him. I then started to get a bunch swinging a Pink Lipstick. I gave Don some of my latest flies and he drifted down river. I switched to nymphing because it was almost too slow to swing. I ended up with 20 (5 swinging and 15 nymphing). This was the second best day for me this run.

Went back with the mini mid river early this morning and only got one dangling a Pink Lipstick. Don Morris floated down in his canoe and found a pod of about 200 shad but they had lock jaw and he only got 2. Floated the upper river in the afternoon with Earle and we got two apiece swinging.

I guess in low, fairly clear water they are pretty spooky?

Maybe longer, lighter FC leaders are needed too.

Floated with Earle today and we got into double digits but it took 6 hours of work. All swinging the following flies: Bloody Maria, Ronald McDonald, Pink Lipstick and Andy’s Perdigon. It’s only going to get better!

3000 cfs is good but 5000-7000 cfs is the best.

Did a solo float today and it was pretty steady until noon then it shut off. I was throwing 25 ft of LC-13 on a 6 wt switch rod because they were deep.
