Yes Bill, seeking the stainless 45-70. Not for Alaska, but more specifically because I have begun to enjoy a literal cast and blast combo while fishing certain areas of the north state near where I live. A tough gun that has knockdown power and allows for quick follow up shots is necessary.

Taylor, the new Ruger-made 1895 SBL is supposed to be miles above the old Marlin-made ones. Might be worth holding out a bit longer until you can find a new one.

Yea, that’s what I’d really like to find but they seem to be impossible to acquire. The gun dealers that are getting them are posting them on GunBroker for 3x the retail price. Apparently Ruger is about to 'drop the hammer' about it.

That’s good to hear. Been pretty frustrating seeing the erroneous price gouging. Hopefully they’ll start coming more available and at more reasonable prices here shortly.

They use to call guns like that "Brush Guns"......

Great for pigs, bear, deer and elk in heavy cover at shots mostly under 100 yards.

The 400 grain slug going 2,200 fps from a .45-70 Government would have great knock down power.

I think if you had a bolt action rifle in "458 Winchester Magnum" it would also shoot the less powerful ".45-70 Government" cartridge.

Our gunsmiths at Sports Unlimited and the Tower of Sports made .458 magnum "bear guns" for Alaskan hunting and fishing guides.
