    Default 299 Traffic Controls?

    Hello Swingers,

Has anyone been to the Trinity lately? How are the traffic controls down river of Big Flat? Heading up next Thursday and curious if it's possible to get below Big Bar/Del Loma?

Join me in some rain dancing this week would you!

Yes, it's possible. But it's a mess. Limited windows available for transit. Check CalTrans website for current transit windows available. If you can plan around them, it's doable.

Also note, the Big Bar/Del Loma areas of the river are technically closed to use due to the fires until Jan 2022. You could be cited (although that may be unlikely), and the fine is hefty.

We were up there last week, staying right by the closure. The bottom line is that getting through is a PIA, and the Del Loma stretch is, as noted above, technically closed. On top of that the fishing is slow. I went 1 for 2 over 2 days swinging, the 1 being a small 22” wild hen. My buddy, who is one of the fishiest guys I’ve ever known, did about the same nymphing. It’s worth the run to the Klamath, which fished well from Seiad Valley to I-5. The Scott also looked good, drove it last Monday afternoon but didn’t fish.

Trinity was pretty hot for a bit after that big rain with the early fish, but the issue with that river is always that the water gets cold and the fish get stale when we go through long dry stretches. It always fishes best on the drop after a good soaker, even better if we can actually get a steady parade of modest storms that keep the water warmer and the fish moving around.

Looks like the weather might change a bit going into the back half of the month with the big ridge retreating, and hopefully the closure is lifted for the lower sections in January which could make for some decent fishing up that way.

I see it's raining up there right now. Yeah. With King tides this past weekend, maybe a few fresh fish entered the system and more weather for this coming weekend(Fingers crossed). Heading up Thursday night and fishing through Monday. Probably going to be cold and wet. I can take it and I can't wait! A friend/guide just posted a picture on FB of a massive male (maybe 15lbs) caught this weekend.

Ahhhhh, fisherman are such optimistic buggers!!!! I can't predict the future, but no significant rain is projected to fall until MON/TUE the following week (and that's a hope!). And nope, it ain't raining right now, I'd call it a light mist that won't make it to the river. So yeah, this week is gonna be cold, but not wet! Right now, the river is ultra low (amusing to watch the many drift boaters try and navigate the skinny water and push their boats into rocks), clear and very cold with tough fishing. Due to too many fisherman lying about residency within the burn area, Cal Trans is now making people prove residency to allow access to the burned areas, so you might not find any place to park to go fishing, unless you're an actual resident. Ahhhh, the joys of living in beautiful Shastanistan!!!!

Optimism pays off! Just got back from one of our best Trinity Trips! We got to the cabin on the river in JC on Thursday evening and the party began! Petundra and I fished out of my drift boat on Friday and Saturday and we were guided on Sunday and Monday. It was cold up there and the water was low and crystal clear. But, we still found fish and had an incredible break from reality!

The first day was the hardest for us. We got a late start and unfortunately, found ourselves to be one of 7 boats floating from Evans Bar to JC Campground. It turned out that we were fishing in the middle(more like the back end) of the Cast for Hope tournament. We still managed a few fish, a couple of halfies and a couple of adults. Not a bad first day considering. We found a couple of runs conducive to swinging but, found no love with the two handers. All of our fish were caught under indicators on this trip. We opted for the same float on Saturday morning and only had to jockey with two other floaters. We had a decent day with 4 or 5 halfies with a few adults mixed in. One was a beautifully colored up wild buck that measured out at 26". On Sunday we fished with our friend /guide and floated the Canyon Section down to Sky Ranch. We were the only boat on that float and had the river to ourselves, save a couple of bank fisherman. It was a cold, cold day but, we managed to have a decent day. I got a few Halfies and one adult. Adam got 3 adults to the boat and a couple of halfies. My highlight came in the afternoon. I hooked into a real good fish and had him on the line for a good while. I got a good hook set and got him on the reel pretty quickly. Immediately after the hook set he went crazy! Peeling off a boat load of line off my Hatch reel and gave us a nice display of some aerial acrobatics! This was really the first time I heard one of my reels sing! It was a huge fish, guesstimates had it well over 30"! The sound when it went back into the water was a deep thud! This was my first tangle with a fish of that size on a fly and I got schooled. After a few runs he went deep again. I was finally getting some of my line back and I thought I had him tired out when I made a rookie mistake. After I got most of my line back we found out he still had gas in the tank and decided to bolt again, my reaction was to pinch the line to the cork. Snap he was gone! I/we were all devastated and maybe a little pissed off. But mostly, blown away at the size of him. What a rush!!!!! For our final day yesterday we decided to go back to the canyon again. We were on the water at 8:00 and again had it to ourselves. The weather was misreable, in the mid 30's all day with basically a non-stop rain. It was freaking cold! But, we did even better and landed we another 8 fish. Only one of which was a half pounder. Every fish hooked yesterday was landed and 5 of the adults came in between 25”-28”. Other than being frozen to the core and facing the reality of a 5 hour car ride I was pretty elated and the drive home wasn’t so bad!

Overall, it was a great trip. It was a little cold but, that just made the whiskey and fire back at the cabin that much better! From what we saw on our own and from what we heard from the tournament participants as well as our friend, it seems like there are a lot of big fish in the river this winter( a friend in the tournament said there were four fish caught on Saturday that all taped out a 29”). Hopefully, this weather will put some more in there. Oh yeah, still a lot of Silvers in the river!
