Default Paperwork to DMV for buying used boat?

    Hi,
My friend is giving me his boat and trailer.

    I have the pink slip.

Does the “notice of transfer and release of liability “ get detached then filled out and sent to DMV. See top of the photo?

The back has “application for transfer by new owner”. I’m assuming I fill out and keep.

Anything else I need to do?

    Thats a good friend.

Not sure about the application for transfer, but the notice of transfer and release of liability can be done online, very easy.

Why not just call the DMV?

Registering and transferring title via online will be a back and forth, with fees due, etc. And it will take 4+ months -COVID, workload, etc. Best option, make an in person appointment and take the boat and trailer with you if the trailer does not have tags or a pink slip.

I think the “notice of transfer and release of liability “ is to inform the DMV that your friend has sold or given the boat and trailer to someone else (you). It is supposed to release him from any responsibility of the boat and trailer. I think you fill it out now and take it in or mail it in or do it online?

Maybe you can get him to write a receipt for the boat @ $100 and the trailer @ $50?

Do you have a pink slip for the boat and the trailer that he signed off on?

I would go in person to the DMV.

    This is my best guess..................

    Hi,
    Thanks for the input.
I tried calling DMV and it's an endless hold.
I'll get my friend to sign the pink slip and send in the "notice of transfer and release of liability" to the DMV.
I'll also go on-line to see "notice of transfer and release of liability" is any faster.
I remember registering my inflatable boat took six months; so this will probably be the same.

    Thanks

Try AAA if your a member. I bought a boat and trailer a couple of years ago and It was quick and easy at a AAA office.

Like others said best to go to the DMV.
For sure get a receipt / bill of sale from your friend.
My suggestion is to go to a smaller office like the Lodi office.
They will get you in and out in no time. Went there twice with boat related items and out in under an hour.

Have y'all seen the kiosks in your local supermarkets? Idk if that'd help, but if it was feasible- alot less headaches. Mosdef put a value for the two deals, govt wants their due.
