Default Big Lagoon, streamer fly suggestions

    Hi,

I am going to try fishing Big Lagoon in Humboldt County next month and was wondering if anyone had a favorite streamer fly that they know works in there.

I can prospect with the standard olive or brown woolly buggers and/or a Clouser, I'm sure they'll get some attention. But I'm looking for something that is known to be good for Cutthroat in the Humboldt lagoons.

I have good luck with a spruce fly there. It might not be because it is the right fly, may be more because thats what i decided to tie

Brown is a good color for coastal cutthroat. Besides woolly buggers, try brindle bugs. Good luck!

I also agree that brown is the best (in my experience) for California coastal cutthroat in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. I like a variation of the reverse spider fly that uses rubber legs - the cutts love it. I've also had success with a brown crazy charlie fly, retrieved in short, erratic strips. Make sure you park your car in a secure spot, let us know how you do and good luck!

Drop down the path on the north end of the lake to the beach.

Walk along the sand down at the north end because that is where it usually breaks open at high water.

Chris Pasley use a #10 Hairs Ear nymph in there when he went to Humboldt State.

    Early morning might be best....

    Look at Google Earth.

Thanks for all the tips! We'll see what works. If nothing does, I'll turn around and try for perch in the surf.

Found an old faded photocopy of Mike Fong article from Inside Angler, 1993?. Scanned and hopefully readable. Tough getting much info, any more appreciated. Reports?
