    Default Middle Fork Feather Advice

Dont want to ask for any secrets, but would like to fish the middle fork for the first time with a buddy in a couple weeks. Trying to figure out where we can hike in in the canyon section, called the feather river ranger district in oroville and was told the river is closed from cleghorn bar all the way down to above oroville due to fire damage? Any suggestions for access? Was hoping we could backpack down somewhere and hike out but car camping is also ok if not, national forest dispersed camping is much preferred over developed campgrounds with fees. If we should just stay upstream of sloat thats ok but much more interested in wild trout rather than stockers and would prefer rugged access for more solitude. Thanks

Get it in now while you can, it’s going to be to low and warm to fish soon. It’s looking like late June flows already, our basin lacked snow this year big time. Please stop fishing it come early summer, this rivers temps can get up to bathwater feeling and these fish are something special that they’ve adapted to survive one extreme to another. Please take a temp before you fish and don’t stress the fish out! As for places to fish, I’ll let you do your homework on that. Good luck and enjoy and watch out for those buzz tails!

Hey Mark thanks for your reply! Im not so much after places to fish, actually what i really want to know is what the national forest closure is in a very general area. The lady i spoke with at the feather river ranger dIstrict said that there was a special order (believe she called it a “K order”) that closed not only the accesses but the actual river itself to fishing/camping etc. due to fire damage. she said it was from around cleghorn bar all the way down to oroville, from my understanding that is the entire canyon section of the MF Feather? Ive been searching online but havent found anything about this. She suggested i talk to mt hough ranger station in quincy, for more info as she was vague and didnt have details, but havent heard back yet from them. Has anyone heard anything about this closure?

FYI, the entire river is Wild and Scenic, the first river in California to receive that designation . . . no stocked fish anywhere on the river.

The pond was empty last week due to the leeches again. Hopefully they get it filled and planted for the kids annual trout derby
