Default Tropical Family Destinations with Fly Fishing too!

    Hey All,

Looking for some suggestions for a tropical destination that will allow my wife to relax, kids 13 & 17 to have fun, and me to throw some flies. We were getting ready to book another trip to Hawaii and I suggested we try something more exotic... I mentioned Belize and got interest. We know absolutely nothing about Belize but thought it might be an option. A couple of other places we have considered is Mexico(not Cabo) and the Bahamas.... Time frame is February next year, we're going to do a beach week instead of a ski week...

Curious and looking forward to what you all recommend.

Belize is a great option if you find the right location. Beaches, snorkeling, Mayan ruin tours for the family. Haven't been to Cancun/Cozumel/Yucatan but probably even more for the family to do. Florida Keys always a good choice as well.

    Default Tropical Destinations....

You mention that you want an exotic destination. How about the Cook Islands (Aitutaki specifically)?? It's a beautiful atoll with Bonefish & giant Trevally in the lagoon and the usual suspects offshore. On my visit, the accommodations were very good and food was really good. The native islanders are friendly. Altho, the airfare is expensive, the stay on the island and food are very reasonable. Turns out that a trip there for a week was close to the cost of a week in La Paz, MX. You can find out more about this from Jay Murakoshi (a member of this bb). One caution, many of the Pacific Island destinations are closed to tourism due to the pandemic and maybe MX, too....

I just talked to Allan Mills this morning who runs the resort where we stay. He said the Cook Islands Aitutaki is still closed and might not be opened until late this year, if that. Word is that there might be a bubble opening between NZ and the Cook Islands in May. But they still don't have the vaccine or testing on the island, so he thinks nothing will happen until then.
No direct flights for LAX to Rarotonga with Air New Zealand. I hope that changes. I don't feel like flying to NZ and then to the Cook Islands and then to Aitutaki, but if that's what we need to do, then I'll go for it.
I have the last week of October and the first week of November still on the books, with almost a full group in each week.
So now yoo're up to date regarding Aitutaki

The flight from Rarotonga to Aitutaki is only 35 minutes...but as others have mentioned the borders of the Cook Islands are still closed to all international visitors.

Not to jack the thread, but if flight fares were not an issue and one had a week - 2 to take with a non fishing wife and funds we re e tight where would one recomend? This would be at least a year out.

Again,Aitutaki in the Cook Islands is probably THE idyllic tropical location. It's not only home to some of the biggest Bonefish on the planet, but is a perfect holiday destination for your partner and children.Look forward to real down-home hospitality and a relaxing time.

Thanks guys! Price once there seem to be affordable. What is going to cost a family of four to fly down there though? Can't seem to get that info.....

You could always come back to Hawaii and chase big bones, but last February the weather was horrible. I would go to Grand Bahama, and fish bones. Aitutaki would be great. Last year we went to Fiji and it was beautiful and relatively cheap. Check out Mike Hennessy he is running the fishing program at Namotu now. Great guy and you can try and get a dogtooth.
