I have heard rumors that there is a small Hex hatch on lower Scotts Flat reservoir. Has anyone seen this, and if so when is a good time to go, or is the hatch so small the fish don't really key in on them?
Thanks!

The peak Hex hatch on Fall river is around the 4th of July.
The Hex on Lake Almanor is mid-June to mi-July.

Bill,
That's interesting! I hadn't heard of that! Do any of the fish key in on them at Natomas? How long does that hatch last?

I've fished the Lower Scotts Hex hatch as late as November amid a snow storm. The foothill hatches are nothing like the brief but intense hatches you find at Fall River or Almanor. On foothill and valley waters they seem to start in late June and trickle all the way through summer and into fall. I've never seen fish key on them, but they will certainly eat them on an incidental basis. The nymphs make nightly vertical migrations as the hatch grows near, so trout see the nymphs many times more often than the duns. A brown/yellow wooly bugger works as well as anything. Tom at Reel Anglers in Grass Valley probably knows Lower Scotts as well as, if not better than, anyone.
I'll check it out. Thanks Ralph!
