The East coast has us beat as far as surf fishing or inshore / near shore fishing goes because it has much shallower water and tons of food for gamefish.

I grew up fishing for stripers and blues on the south shore of Long Island. It was before I started flyfishing in the salt, just conventional gear and ultra light spinning tackle. But even on that gear, catching stripers to 25" and blues to 18lbs. on 4 lb test mono was a fantastic experience. We hooked and lost stripers over 35". The late fall migration was epic. Amazing to see a school of (10 - 15") menhaden the size of a football field pinned against the shore line and a large breakwater by huge stripers and blues. The dorsal fins of the bait were pushed through the surface and just quivering. Every now and then a bathtub size explosion would just spray menhaden out of the water as a big fish tore through. Unfortunately those times and that ecosystem are now history. But there is still some amazing fishing on this end of the country...
50+ years ago when I was growing up in Sacramento we had fantastic hunting and fishing too.
It has gone way down hill here too.
