    Default Striper Help

Looking to catch my first striper, and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on any good places to go/best seasons, preferably close to the Sacramento area. Not looking for your secret spots, just a general idea of where to go. I have access to a kayak. Thanks!

Go to Kiene's Fly Shop on the weekends and spend some time with Captain Andy Guibord.

He knows the lower American river better than most for all species, especially stripers.

April/May and Aug/Sept are prime months but some are in there year round.

The American Shad are so thick in the American in June/July that the Stripers are not hungry then.

Oct/Nov/Dec are top months for Stripers in the Delta.

You can wade for Stripers in the A, but for fly fishing, standing in a drifting boat is best.

Some times Andy will take someone out on an exploratory float trip where you both fish, for a reasonable rate.

Andy can get you the right tackle, fly lines, leaders and flies.

Fly fishing from a kayak for Stripers does not seem to effective to me?

    Any comments.......

They can be caught in a kayak but the casting and stripping is a lot easier if your kayak is stable enough that you can stand up. If winds are light and you can stand up and cast you can cover the water pretty well. You just need to know where a few of them are since you can't buzz around the delta in your Nitro boat with your 150 hp motor looking for them.

    Thanks John......

I can see where those larger, wider serious fishing kayaks would be an advantage to be able to stand up and cast.
