Do not buy farm raised salmon! Pass it on. The viruses and parasites are just as detrimental as with all the toxins washed in.

Sadly I think the entire World is eating that farm raised salmon and many restaurants too.

It is much more cost effective for restaurant owners to source and serve farm raised salmon. The size and consistency of each serving, etc. I remember a time when I would walk into Original Joe's in San Jose and Fresh Salmon was the special..... they served a Salmon steak on the same size platter their renown Veal Scaloppini was served on......... Darn steak was from a fish that was easily in the mid 20's in weight. Same flat price per plate, no matter how ginormous the fish was. Like many of their dishes, enough to feed a family. Restaurants today serving salmon, serve a farm raise serving that is carefully measured out to the ounce.......

1.4 million salmon were harvested by California commercial salmon fisherman in 1988. (800K escaped up the valley rivers that year) Buy 'em fresh off the back of a C Boat too. Miss those days.

I think the powers to be decided that it was too expensive to upgrade all those sewage plants?

A little correction here: A friend sent me some info on Sacramento's newer sewage treatment systems:

There used to be Silvers/Cohos in many streams from California to Alaska.

Seems like they have been working on the Silver salmon restoration for the past 20 years with little success.

They have been working in the Northeast to bring back the Atlantic salmon rivers but they does not seem to be going well either.

Why aren’t the hatcheries producing coho that belong in the rivers? If Nevada is able to properly raise Lahontan cutthroat without breeding siblings why can’t they do this in hatcheries to help bring them back? I think the Russian could be helped with a brood stock program like the Natives do for steelhead in Oregon and Washington.

Here is an interesting video about raising salmon in the rice field of Nor Cal:

I think the secret to hatcheries is to get the fish out of the hatchies when they are very small.

This way they would become more like wild fish and have better survival.
