I went to Australia in October with those guys who shot the video of the sandal fly that caught the GT's. One of the guys caught a GT around 70 lbs from the beach on a Queen fish that he had hooked into and was fighting. The Queenie was around 12 lbs before it was eaten.
We have encountered some big GT's in Aitutaki in the coral heads. Purple and black was the color. You also need a few extra fly lines. E2's brother said the best time to catch the real big GT's was late February and all of March. They come in from the blue water into the bay to feed on the bait fish. The only draw back, this is monsoon season. You either hit it or miss it.
Were going back in October/November 2021. This trip is actually cheaper than my Baja trip and much cheaper than CI. No layover in Hawaii.
