    Default Eagle lake early August

Headed to Eagle lake. Never been there before and will have my boat with me. Ready to fly or gear fish. Any helpful hints are welcome.

    Thanks,

Spring and fall/winter are the popular times for Eagle Lake.

The first month it is open and Oct/Nov/Dec.

This is when the fish are in shallow feeding on scuds, leeches, insects and minnows.

July, August and September they are probably fairly deep but I heard there are cold Springs in the lake.

The trout will be deeper retreating into the cool waters of those Springs in the Summer.

By anchoring in the right place you could use small woolly buggers on a very fast sinking line.

Some call this "count down fishing".

Having a good fish finder might be good.

You could also fish around these Spring with bait or troll very deep.

Eagle Lake is at 5,000 ft and Susanville near by is about 4,000 ft.

This week it is in the low 90s up there for the daily high.

It is in the 50s at night so camping would be good.

I am sure that if you went to somewhere above 8,000 ft it would be much cooler?

Check out Val Aubrey’s Eagle Lake site. Great site with current conditions.

Bill's advice is spot-on. You'll need a boat, local knowledge and specialized rigs for that time of year.

If you go please post a report of the fishing and conditions in the area. Especially interested in the disposition of the campgrounds and any open businesses in Spaulding.

I have not been there in quite a few years. I typically went soon after the opener on Memorial day then a couple of trips in October and November. Eagle took a severe hammering due the prolonged drought a few years ago. As a result the reports from Eagle have been slim here on Kiene's and also over at the bait chucker sites. What little I've heard in the past year was that Eagle might be coming back, albeit slowly.

Maybe it's time to check it out again this fall?

Thanks for the reply. I do have a good fish finder and downriggers and expected that I would most likely be fishing deep. Maybe throw a fly in the early or late hours. Well see. Camping as part of a group and will likely have at least three boats. Maybe someone will figure it out.
I'll try and follow up on how we did.

I second the responce to call Val Aubrey. She's usually on Bob Simms Radio Show every Saturday morning from 5:00AM-8-00AM and will give you an honest update as to what's going on.

Be sure to ask her about the water level concerning your boat. Sometimes with low levels you can't launch at either marina ramps.

We usually slow trolled orange marabou leech patterns for great luck.

Man, I haven’t been to that lake since the early 90’s, fished with a guy named Jeff Blunden, I’m sure a lot of you remember him. Great guy and fly fisher as well. He kicked my a$$ all over the place, tubing the tules with a scud and Jay Fair cinnamon Chrystal hair bugger. Late October and it was cold, so cold the next day my tube froze on top of my little truck camper shell ... Good times

Jeff Blunden was a great guy.....good fly fisher too. His sister is Joan London, TV celeb. He went to the Middle East 40? years ago and made a lot of money working there. Came home after some time and bought himself and his mother, both very nice condos in Fair Oaks. He worked at our shop and was very good for the sport. I think his diabetes got him.

Had a great time up there. Between two boats we caught 7 trout over 20" and lots of chub. Trout were surfacing and that is where they were being caught. Had a nice camp sight right off the water and actually saw the stars again and counted many shooting stars.
    I'll be going back again.
